Stations of the Cross Set
The Stations of the Cross are a traditional form of sacred art depicting the events and suffering of Jesus, leading to His crucifixion. Based on the Scriptures, they are the focus of prayerful meditation for Christians around the world, especially on Good Friday.
Sacred Heart Church in Samford, Queensland, commissioned Dianne Minnaar to replace their old, faded reproductions of the Stations of the Cross as part of the church interior renewal. The new Scriptural Stations of the Cross were painted on 1.2metre tall hoop pine kneelers stripped from old church pews. They deliberately retain the worn, rounded edges, scratches, stains and nail holes of the original kneelers to validate their origins and history. In a further link to the past, the artist tore fragments of the old reproductions and collaged them into the texture of the 14 panels.
The design and style of this work has been inspired by and retains the essence of ancient Byzantine icons. The artist has interpreted the events in a contemporary and stylised manner. The commission was completed in March 2015.
The reproduction of the "Samford Stations" contains a full set of 14 Stations of the Cross on one sheet.
Individually hand titled, signed reproductions.
